Payments sit at the center of every commerce experience. As customer expectations rise and businesses push into new markets, payment infrastructure has to keep up — and most of it doesn't.

So we rebuilt ours.

Our redesigned Payment API is a ground-up evolution of our payment platform, and it ships this autumn. It rethinks how payments work from first principles, ready for the most complex commerce scenarios merchants and integrators can throw at it.

Built for how commerce actually works

Most payment architectures assume a tidy one-to-one relationship between an order and a payment. Real commerce doesn't work that way.

Customers split payments across methods, trigger partial captures, collect multiple refunds, and complete a single purchase across several interactions.

Our Payment API treats these as the norm, not the exception, with native support for:

  • Multiple authorizations per order
  • Multiple captures
  • Multiple refunds

Workflows that used to demand custom code and fragile workarounds now work out of the box.

Payments and orders, finally decoupled

Payments now become independent resources that evolve with your business, rather than being chained to the order lifecycle. That's the biggest architectural change.

Payments and orders are now separate entities, enabling greater control over transaction flows in how they are initiated and managed.

That unlocks:

  • Flexible payment orchestration
  • Alternative checkout experiences
  • Clean handling of retries and adjustments

This is an architecture that scales as fast as your payment experience does.

A payment ecosystem that grows with you

Consumer preferences fragment by region and market — and they keep multiplying.

The new Payment API makes integrating and managing a growing universe of payment methods straightforward, so you can give customers exactly the options they expect and add new providers with minimal effort.

As the ecosystem grows, the API grows with it.

Payment methods

Intelligent payment method availability

Not every payment method belongs in every context.

The platform now ships with configurable availability rules, so payment options appear based on the conditions you define. You get precise control over the checkout experience and far simpler management of regional, operational, and commercial requirements.

Gift cards

Now first-class

Gift cards are no longer a special case bolted onto the side.

They're now first-class payment methods with the same architecture and capabilities as every other payment type. The result: a consistent integration model, richer customer experiences, and a platform that's simpler to maintain.

Customer wallet

Smarter management

We've overhauled how payment wallets work.

The API delivers powerful wallet management that makes stored payment methods easier to support and checkout faster and more seamless for returning customers — with room to grow into whatever wallet features come next.

Order subscriptions

A sharper engine

Subscriptions live or die on payments that just work — renewal after renewal, with no drama.

Now that payments are independent of the order lifecycle, our order subscription engine gets more powerful and more agile: cleaner renewals, smarter retries, and far more room to handle the edge cases recurring revenue throws at you. Recurring billing stops being a constraint and starts being a capability.

The home for agentic commerce

The next wave of commerce won't be driven by people clicking checkout buttons. It'll be driven by agents — discovering, negotiating, and paying on behalf of customers. That future breaks almost every assumption baked into legacy payment systems.

Ours is built for it.

Independent payment resources, multiple authorizations, and configurable availability rules are exactly what agent-driven flows demand: payments that can be initiated, held, adjusted, and settled programmatically, without a rigid order lifecycle getting in the way. This is the home for agentic payment flows — and the foundation merchants need to meet that future head-on rather than scramble to catch up.

What’s ahead

The redesigned Payment API isn't a technical upgrade. It's a strategic bet on the future of commerce.

Multiple transactions. Expanded integrations. Payments decoupled from orders. Intelligent availability rules. Gift Cards as first-class citizens. Smarter wallets. A sharper subscription engine. And a foundation ready for agentic commerce. Together, they're a platform built for the next generation of commerce.
