Whenever a browser makes an API call that includes custom headers, credentials, or non-simple methods (like \u003Ccode>PUT\u003C\u002Fcode>, \u003Ccode>PATCH\u003C\u002Fcode>, or \u003Ccode>DELETE\u003C\u002Fcode>), it first sends a \u003Cstrong>pre-flight request\u003C\u002Fstrong> — an HTTP \u003Ccode>OPTIONS\u003C\u002Fcode> call — to verify that the target server permits the operation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\u003Cp>Pre-flight requests are small and informational, but the irony is that they often travel as far as a real API request would. That round trip adds latency to every subsequent call and inflates perceived response times, especially for UI elements such as MFEs or Drop-Ins.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\u003Cp>Even with caching, this setup means unnecessary network hops for millions of lightweight requests every day. In practice, this means the edge node instantly recognizes a valid pre-flight request and generates the appropriate \u003Ccode>OPTIONS\u003C\u002Fcode> response \u003Cstrong>without ever contacting the origin\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\u003Cp>Here’s what happens now:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\u003Col>\n\u003Cli>The CDN edge inspects incoming \u003Ccode>OPTIONS\u003C\u002Fcode> requests.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>If the request matches the expected CORS patterns (verified domain, methods, headers), it immediately returns a \u003Cstrong>synthetic\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003Ccode>204 No content\u003C\u002Fcode> with the correct \u003Ccode>Access-Control-Allow-*\u003C\u002Fcode> headers.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>The request never leaves the edge, eliminating the origin round trip.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>The browser receives the response in near-zero time and proceeds to send the actual API call.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\n\u003Cp>This logic runs at the CDN’s edge scripting layer, integrated into our caching configuration.
